Description

Behind the Scenes: Costumes!

Costumes are one of the wonderful and important ways productions come alive on stage. Join in the fun of learning some history of costuming, the process of costuming a show, and have fun with hands on creating and sourcing costume pieces!

Hand sewing skills are helpful but not required. Also, plan for additional outside of class time for sourcing items to build a costume - either from home or thrift stores - which may require an additional cost of up to $20 beyond the regular class fee.

Teacher:

Emily Walen

Emily enjoys the creativity found in her 20+ year professional career in the arts as a photographer, visual artist, and book illustrator, allowing her to work in many fields including the TV and music industries. This summer she was the set designer and assistant costumer for a local production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. Emily makes, sews, paints, builds, designs, photographs, crochets, or does some other kind of creative project just about every day! Additionally, she studied classical vocal performance in college, while also performing with a jazz ensemble (jazz being her favorite, she now only sings opera on occasion to evoke laughs from her kids), and has performed in many places over the years including in a local recent production of Once Upon a Musical. And now she, along with her husband, are raising four music-and-theater-loving children. Emily’s excited to share her passion for the arts! She looks forward to helping our CYT kids grow in their creative gifts and can’t wait to see them shine!
