This class is full!

One thing that sets musical theater apart from other stage productions is the use of singing to further the plot of the story. A singer who can hit all the right notes but doesn’t think about emotion, character, or storytelling is just that – a singer. Musical theater audiences need actors and actresses who can fully step into their characters and tell a story with a song.

In this class students will develop their skills as singers and actors by exploring what it means to “become” their character. They will expand their abilities to get to the heart of the character to make the song mean something. They will learn how to better communicate the emotion of the song beyond the notes on the page. Students will get the opportunity to sing solos as well as with ensembles, all while observing vocal health and proper technique. This class will culminate with a fun and exciting character medley in the Showcase.

Chris Jones

Chris Jones has been involved in music and performing his whole life. While attending Houston Baptist University he was the student conductor for the university choirs where he discovered the joy he gets when helping people create beautiful music with the talents God has given them. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Music and Christianity, he continued in music ministry as a worship pastor. His excitement for theater and performing in stage productions was recently reignited when he was invited to be an additional bass voice in a production of "Matilda the Musical". This summer he had the opportunity to perform in a local community theater production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s "Cinderella" as the character Sebastian. He is excited to continue teaching with CYT and feels honored to be the music director for this Fall’s CYT production of "High School Musical". He loves his family and the excitement that comes with his four children, and he is grateful to God for life’s many blessings.
