Anne of Green Gables
Director: Renee Davis

Adapted by Joseph Robinette from the novel by L.M. Montgomery

This dramatization captures the charm and excitement of L.M. Montgomery's enduring classic about an orphan girl, Anne Shirley, from her first encounter with her austere guardian to her thrilling graduation from Queen's Academy. The play faithfully recreates the memorable events and characters from the brilliant novel. All the tragedies and triumphs that mark Anne's growth from adolescence to early adulthood are here: her friendship with Diana, her feuds with Gilbert, her adoration of Matthew, the mistaken wine bottle, the cake disaster, the broken leg, the scholastic achievements, and the saving of Green Gables. Whether the playgoer is an "old friend" of Anne's or meeting her for the first time, this play will solidify a lasting friendship between the audience and one of literature's most unforgettable characters.

Major Roles – Speaking Appearances in Two or More Scenes

Anne Shirley (Age 13–16)
Anne is a lively, free-spirited red-headed orphan who comes to Green Gables to live with Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. Her passion and imagination lead her to often talking too much and being overly dramatic. It’s this drama that can sometimes cause her temper to get the best of her. Always the optimist, Anne grows from a lively girl into a thoughtful, intelligent young woman.

Marilla Cuthbert (Age 40–60)
Marialla Cuthbert is an independent, private, no-nonsense woman who raises Anne with her brother Matthew at Green Gables in Avonlea. She struggles with Anne’s imagination and fiery temper but gradually grows to love her deeply and develops a deeper sense of who she is as a woman.

Matthew Cuthbert (Age 40–60)
Matthew’s quiet nature is immediately drawn to the boisterous personality of Anne Shirley. Matthew helps his sister Marilla to see the good in Anne and ultimately helps these two see the best in each other and love one another. An anchor throughout the story, Matthew helps to create stability where there is angst and love where there is disappointment.

Gilbert Blythe (Age 15–18)
Gilbert Blythe captures Anne’s attention from the very beginning. His quick, well-matched wit, and Anne’s big personality are put to the test after he teases her about the color of her hair at school, calling her “carrots.” Thus begins a rivalry that evolves into mutual admiration and affection. Gilbert is mentally strong and he knows that in order to win Anne back, he will have to prove he was genuine from the beginning.

Diana Barry (Age 13–15)
When Diana meets Anne for the first time she encounters a breath of fresh air. Her admiration for Anne’s energy and imagination quickly leads her to becoming Anne’s “bosom friend.” Diana comes from a rich Avonlea family who believes in tradition, manners, and good character. Diana’s long dark hair is something Anne idolizes and envies which leads to mischief and chaos in the show.

Rachel Lynde (Age 40–60)
Described as the town gossip, Rachel Lynde is always where the action takes place in Avonlea. A long-time neighbor of the Cuthberts, Rachel's nosy and outspoken ways provide comic relief in many scenes throughout the show. While she often means well, and says what you may be thinking as an audience member, she is constantly fanning the flame in every scene.

Mrs. Barry (Age 30–50)
Mrs. Barry emanates wealth, class, and above all... manners. As Diana’s mother, she is only hopeful that her daughter will marry well. She is not interested in Diana going off to college or working. Mrs. Barry is very skeptical of Diana’s “bosom friend,” but eventually grows to love Anne.

Minnie May Barry (Age 7–11)
Minnie May Barry is Diana’s younger sister. Minnie May is sweet, cantankerous, and full of herself. She idolizes everything Diana has, including her best friend. Minnie May brings to life everything a younger sister embodies.

Mr. Phillips (Age 20–30)
Mr. Phillips attempts to be a rigid schoolteacher who rules his classroom with an iron fist. Mostly, because he’s smitten with student Priscilla Andrews. The students at the Avonlea schoolhouse see right through Mr. Phillips though and pull one prank after another during class. This is Anne’s first schoolteacher.

Miss Susan Stacy (Age 20–40)
Miss Susan Stacy is a well educated, proper lady. She becomes Anne’s second teacher and beloved mentor. Miss Stacy’s imagination mirrors Anne’s and she helps her to discover she can be anything she wants to be in life. Her encouragement and love throughout the play help to elevate Anne to success.

Aunt Josephine Barry (Age 60–80)
Aunt Josephine Barry is Diana’s wealthy and proper great-aunt. Her initial encounter with Anne is most surprising and leads her to exhibit her stern personality. But Anne’s quick wit allows Mrs. Barry’s humorous side to emerge and her love and admiration for Anne to develop throughout the story.

Mrs. Allan (Age 30–50)
The minister’s kind and gracious wife. A “kindred spirit,” she becomes an important mentor and friend to Anne.

Josie Pye (Age 13–18)
Snobbish, competitive, and jealous of Anne, Josie Pye is always trying to outshine those around her and push Anne to her limit. Josie is a gossip and thrives on creating chaos around her.

Jane Andrews (Age 12–18)
A close friend and classmate of Anne’s who joins her in many adventures and social events. Jane’s personality is similar to Diana as she also comes from a family of wealth and manners. She believes in rules and hates when they are broken.

Ruby Gillis (Age 12–18)
Another of Anne’s cheerful classmates and friends, often seen at school gatherings and parties. Ruby can tend to worry in every situation.

Moody MacPherson (Age 12–18)
One of Anne’s schoolmates who dreams of becoming a minister.

Charlie Sloane (Age 12–18)
Anne’s classmate who aspires to a career in politics.

Priscilla Andrews (Age 15–18)
A sixteen-year-old student who attracts attention from the schoolteacher, Mr. Phillips. Priscilla is seen walking with Mr. Phillips and clearly is in love with her schoolteacher.
