The Radio Star
Ages 8–12
Lights, camera… microphone! In The Radio Star, young performers will discover how to bring
stories to life using one of an actor’s most powerful tools—their voice!
Students will explore the exciting world of radio theater, learning how to use vocal expression,
character voices, pacing, emotion, and imagination to tell a story without costumes, sets, or
scenery. They’ll practice creating memorable characters and learn how actors use their voices
to help listeners picture an entire world.
But the actors aren’t the only stars of the show! Students will also discover the art of Foley,
using everyday objects and creative techniques to produce live sound effects such as footsteps,
weather, doors, crashes, and more.
Throughout the class, students will work together to create and rehearse a radio-style
production that combines acting, storytelling, and sound effects. At the end of the session,
family and friends will be invited to a Radio Theater Showcase, where students can
demonstrate their new skills and bring a story to life—one voice and sound effect at a time!
